While interviewing Metcalf, reporter Jonathan Jones consulted with microbiologist Brent Christner. Christner confirmed the existence of ancient microbial life miles beneath the Antarctic ice, but stated these organisms are not substantial enough to support a larger civilization. He also noted the logistical challenges of sustaining life in such an extreme environment.
Metcalf also questioned why access to Antarctica is more difficult than to the Arctic. Although tourist trips are possible, commercial airports are absent, and existing airfields are government-controlled. This limited access, combined with alleged secret meetings of world leaders in the region, fuels Metcalf's speculative theories.
