Appalachian Adventure: Explore the Stunning Vistas from High Knob's Observation Deck

As of October 2025, the High Knob Recreation Area in southwest Virginia continues to be a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts. Nestled within the George Washington-Thomas Jefferson National Forest, this remote, high-elevation retreat offers a stunning observation tower that provides visitors with sweeping views of five mid-Atlantic states.

The fire-proof observation tower, which was rebuilt in 2014 after the original was destroyed by arsonists, sits at an elevation of over 4,000 feet above sea level. From the top, visitors can gaze out over the vast expanse of the Appalachian Mountains and hardwood forests, taking in the natural beauty of the region.

In addition to the iconic observation tower, the High Knob Recreation Area boasts nearly 2,000 miles of hiking trails, including the 33-mile High Knob Trail, which offers a range of difficulty levels for adventurers of all skill levels.
