28 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Multiday hike in Nitmiluk National Park, Northern Territory
- Stunning gorges, waterfalls, and native flora along the trails
- Chance to spot wildlife and explore Aboriginal rock art

In late September 2025, a group of four adults and three children set out on a five-day hike through Nitmiluk National Park in Australia's Northern Territory. Located 30 kilometers northeast of Katherine, the park is known for its 13 spectacular gorges carved into rusty red sandstone.
The hikers begin their journey along the Yambi Walk, ascending to Smitt Rock, their first campsite. The rocky, undulating trail challenges their ankles, but the expansive views across the rugged landscape and glimpses of the lush gorges below make the effort worthwhile. The group takes a detour to Lily Pond Falls, where they cool off in the refreshing pools before continuing on to Smitt Rock.
The next day, the hikers follow the Waleka Walk trail to Eighth Gorge, where they spend two nights. This allows them to enjoy a rest day, swimming, reading, and exploring the area. They discover galleries of Aboriginal rock art depicting the Jawoyn people's Dreamtime stories. In the evenings, the group gathers on a scenic ledge overlooking the spectacular gorges, savoring their rehydrated meals and gazing up at the Milky Way.
On the final day, the hikers choose a smoother path back along the Yambi Walk, stopping at Dunlop Swamp to admire the delicate flowers. After navigating a few more hills, they return to their cars, some heading to the campground for a swim, while others visit the Katherine Hot Springs for a recovery session.
