Hebrides' Garry Beach Crowned UK's Most Underrated Coastal Gem

On October 16th, 2025, a new report revealed that Garry Beach in the Outer Hebrides has been crowned the UK's most underrated beach. The remote Scottish location, situated on the largest of the Western Isles, Lewis, was highlighted for its pristine waters and dramatic scenery, despite the challenges of reaching it.

The study, conducted by Boat Booker, examined Google Maps beaches tagged as "secluded" and "secret," ranking those with fewer than 100 reviews. Scotland dominated the top 10 list, with six locations making the cut, including spots on islands such as Mull and Barra. Porth Trwyn in Wales was the highest-ranked non-Scottish beach, coming in at number four.

Garry Beach's remote location is likely a key factor in its underrated status. Reaching the beach from London requires a 668-mile journey, including an eight-hour drive, a three-hour ferry, and a five-hour train, followed by an additional hour on the road north of Stornoway. Even the final 15-mile stretch from Stornoway to Garry Beach is described as one of the "dullest, bleakest stretches of countryside in the UK."

However, those who make the trek are rewarded with a stunning coastal landscape. The sandy bay stretches for several hundred meters on either side, with the brilliant blue waters and intriguing rock formations creating a picturesque scene. While the weather can be challenging, with average highs of just 16°C and up to 12 days of rain in July, the beach's remote beauty makes it a true hidden gem for those willing to brave the journey.
