Brewery's Beloved Shire Horses Get Statue
24 Mar
Summary
- A statue will commemorate shire horses that delivered beer for over a century.
- The tradition ended in 2023 when the brewery moved and horses retired.
- Locals are fundraising for a bronze sculpture and background mural.

A tribute is being planned in Devizes to honor the shire horses that were a fixture at Wadworth Brewery for over a century. For 125 years, these magnificent animals transported beer from the brewery to local pubs, a tradition that ended in 2023. Following the brewery's relocation and the horses' retirement, locals Martin and Michelle Armitage initiated a project to commemorate them.
Their vision includes a bronze sculpture, a plinth, and an explanatory plaque, possibly enhanced by a background mural. The father-daughter duo have secured approval from Wadworth brewery and the property developer for the new residential site. They hope the statue will be situated in a public area of the new development, with ongoing fundraising efforts supporting the project.
