Dachshunds Race into Top 5 Breeds
18 Mar
Summary
- Dachshunds entered the top five most popular breeds for the first time in over two decades.
- The AKC rankings cover 202 breeds based on voluntary registration of purebred dogs.
- Animal rights groups like PETA criticize AKC for promoting potentially unhealthy breed traits.

For the first time in more than 20 years, dachshunds have surged into the top five most prevalent dog breeds, according to the American Kennel Club's recent rankings. These standings, which encompass 202 recognized breeds, are compiled from voluntary registrations of purebred dogs and older canines made last year. This annual list often sparks pride among purebred enthusiasts but also faces scrutiny.
Animal rights organizations, including PETA, have voiced strong opposition, with PETA initiating a lawsuit against the AKC. The group alleges the kennel club promotes physical ideals that can lead to health issues in breeds like dachshunds and French bulldogs. PETA further contends that breeding practices lessen adoption chances for needy dogs and perpetuate unhealthy traits.
The AKC, however, states its rankings are merely to satisfy public curiosity and do not encourage purchasing specific breeds. They emphasize the importance of research to ensure any dog acquired fits a potential owner's lifestyle. Meanwhile, other breeds like the cane corso have quickly gained recognition, now ranking 11th, and the coton de tulear is also climbing the popularity ladder.
