In the lead-up to this year's Durga Puja celebrations, the Sheikh Bazaar Durga Puja Committee in Cuttack has unveiled a stunning new silver throne for Maa Durga. The throne, crafted by local silver filigree artist Bisweswar Dey over the past three months, weighs an impressive 42kg and features intricate peacock motifs and detailed work.
Measuring 14 feet wide and 4 feet high, the newly designed throne creates a majestic base for the Durga idol. The committee's secretary, Kishore Behera, emphasized their commitment to innovation and preserving the city's cultural heritage. "As trendsetters in design, we believe in adding to the visual experience for devotees while staying true to our roots," he said.
This is not the first time the Sheikh Bazaar puja committee has made headlines for its grand displays. Last year, they updated the design of their Chandi Medha (silver tableau) and added 50kg of extra silver, making it around 4 quintals in total. This year, the focus has shifted to the grand throne, which is expected to be a major attraction during the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations.
The Sheikh Bazaar puja committee was the second in the city to adopt the silver tableau tradition, following Choudhury Bazaar in 1956. Their efforts to preserve the region's art and culture while providing a visually stunning experience for devotees have earned them a reputation as trendsetters in the local Durga Puja celebrations.
