Coventry's night-time economy has been awarded the prestigious Purple Flag accreditation, signifying the city as a safe destination after dark.
The accreditation covers Coventry city centre, Earlsdon High Street, and the Kasbah, acknowledging their offering of a safe, entertaining, and diverse night out.
Coventry City Council collaborated with the Business Improvement District (BID) and police to enhance night-time experiences. This involved the relaunch of the 'Ask for Angela' scheme, enabling vulnerable individuals to discreetly seek help.
Over the past year, 150 people completed safety training. Additional measures included licensing compliance, taxi safeguarding, and the installation of 100 defibrillators and bleed kits in the last three years.
The BID has provided 200,000 safety items, such as DrinkSafe anti-spiking covers and testing strips, to venues for free distribution. They also partnered on the Best Bar None scheme, recognizing venues excelling in safety and customer experience.
Taxi marshals were introduced to ensure safe travel home, and the BID's street patrol service expanded to deter crime and antisocial behavior during evenings. Independent assessors from the Association of Town Centre Management visited in November, spending a full day and night evaluating the city's offerings.
