Summary
- A YouTube personality dug a secret tunnel connecting his house to his workshop.
- Construction took three years and required steel and concrete supports.
- The project received retrospective planning permission in June 2022.
YouTube personality Colin Furze commenced an ambitious tunnel construction project in November 2018 beneath his garden in Stamford, Lincolnshire. Initially aiming to connect his house to his workshop, the endeavor evolved over three years into a substantial underground passage. This passage was reinforced with steel and concrete, and equipped with lighting, ventilation, and a soil removal system.
The project, which began with simple excavation tools, grew in complexity and scale. By the time Furze submitted a planning application to South Kesteven District Council in April 2022, much of the digging was already complete. The council granted retrospective planning permission on June 10, 2022, following concerns about health, safety, and ground stability.
The tunnel's development was documented in a nine-part YouTube series, attracting millions of viewers. Furze, known for other large-scale builds and experimental vehicles, stated he undertook the tunnel project because he thought it would be "cool." The associated underground bunker had previously won the 2020 Cuprinol Shed of the Year competition.
While retrospective permission was granted, it stipulated that ground and structural integrity must be investigated before any further construction proceeds. Furze's plans for an extended passage, estimated at 15 meters, require separate planning permission due to distinct planning histories for the tunnel and the bunker.
