Colin Farrell is raising awareness for his new foundation, which supports adults with intellectual difficulties. The initiative stems from his personal experience with his eldest son, James, who was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome at four years old. Farrell, 27 when James was born in 2003, is now 23 years old, and the actor's concerns are amplified by the fact that U.S. support systems for children with special needs typically end at age 21.

Farrell articulates a profound fear for James's future, especially the prospect of his son outliving him and his ex-partner, Kim Bordenave. He worries about James requiring residential care in his 30s or 40s without familial support. This deep-seated anxiety prompted the creation of the foundation, which seeks to provide a vital sense of community and belonging for adults with intellectual challenges.

Reflecting on the struggle to find suitable residential care, Farrell noted that if he, with his considerable privilege, faces such difficulties, other families likely do too. The foundation, still in its early stages, aims to offer a more connected and fulfilling life for individuals like James, facilitating community integration through daily outings and activities.

Farrell emphasized that no amount of acting success can overcome certain challenges, such as his son's nonverbal communication. He accepts the inherent messiness of life and the need to lean into the mystery. His sobriety, achieved in the mid-2000s, was significantly influenced by his desire to be a supportive father to James, enabling him to appreciate life's marvels and support his son's unique journey.
