In Coimbatore, a ceremony celebrated seven individuals whose selfless acts of kindness have profoundly impacted their community. These 'Kovai Heroes' were recognized for their extraordinary humanitarian efforts, often undertaken without public recognition.
Joshua, a dedicated individual who pledged his family jewels to build homes for tribal families, was honored posthumously. He suffered a stroke in August 2023 while engaged in constructing a new home for a homeless tribal family.
Other recognized heroes include S. Kanthavelan, who has performed the last rites for over 1,800 victims of accidents, and V. S. Suresh Kumar, a survivor who advocates for road safety. P. Mahendiran, inspired by a childhood incident, rescues and reunites destitute individuals with their families.
Further honorees are P. Kovai Sathish, who facilitates funerals for grieving families through his Thaimai Trust; Sakthivel Palanisamy, a teacher who educates underprivileged students about astronomy using his telescope; Dr. N. Mageswhwaran, a pediatrician offering free coaching to tribal youth; and Vinny R. Peter, who rescues and rehabilitates injured birds.
