Clare Crockett, born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, in 1982, initially harbored ambitions of fame as a Hollywood actress. However, a pivotal trip to Spain in 2000 led her to a pilgrimage where she experienced a profound spiritual awakening, shifting her focus from partying to prayer.
She entered the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother in 2001 at age 18, taking her vows and religious name, Sr Clare Maria of the Trinity and the Heart of Mary. Her life motto, "all or nothing," reflected her deep devotion after falling in love with Jesus Christ.
Tragically, Sr Clare passed away in April 2016 when the school where she taught music in Ecuador collapsed during an earthquake. A decade after her death, her life continues to be celebrated.
In 2025, the Catholic Church declared her a Servant of God, the initial stage in the process for canonization. This recognition allows for the gathering of witness testimonies from Ireland, Spain, Ecuador, and the United States, which will be scrutinized by the department making recommendations to the Pope.
Thousands of people, including members of her religious order and pilgrims from across Ireland and worldwide, have been attending a retreat honoring Sr Clare. Many find her story relatable due to her honesty about her past, seeing her as a saint already. Her anniversary Mass is scheduled for Thursday at St Columba's Church, Long Tower, the same church where her funeral was held.
