- Locals support the idea, see it as bringing more life to the high street

As of September 30th, 2025, the town of Selby is taking a unique approach to revitalizing its high street - by embracing the popularity of charity shops. The charity Up for Yorkshire has used funding from the North Yorkshire mayoral authority to establish a trail showcasing 14 charity shops in the market town.
According to Matt Fisher, Up for Yorkshire's community development lead, these second-hand stores are seen as a "strong starting point for change" and an "exciting opportunity to create a sustainable and vibrant high street." Locals like regular customer Michael Donnelly have welcomed the initiative, with Donnelly stating that "anything we can do for the high street is a good idea" and that the town center is "on the up."
The charity shop trail features a diverse range of organizations, from St Leonard's Hospice to the local Hands of Hope charity. Managers and customers alike praise the shops, highlighting the unique items available and the sense of community they foster. Shopper Valerie Walton notes that charity shops are "much better than ordinary shops" and that they provide affordable options for the community.
The mayor of Selby, David Skaith, has thrown his support behind Up for Yorkshire's plans, stating that while high streets are "constantly changing," they will always be hubs for local communities. With the Vibrant and Sustainable High Street Fund backing the charity shop trail, Selby's residents are hopeful that this innovative approach will breathe new life into their town center.
