Social Anxiety Vanquished by Street Photography in Cardiff

Tom Wilkins, once severely hampered by social anxiety, has found a unique way to manage his condition and empower others through street photography. Starting just 10 months ago in Cardiff, he now connects with thousands, boasting over 70,000 Instagram followers.

Wilkins discovered that approaching strangers for photos and offering compliments provides a significant positive emotional boost, effectively counteracting his anxiety. This practice, which previously involved panic attacks in crowded spaces, has become a rewarding method for him to navigate social situations.

His photography focuses on individuals with alternative styles, inspired partly by his wife who also experiences anxiety. He aims to remove stigma by celebrating self-expression and encouraging people to embrace their unique choices and artistic visions.

Beyond managing his own anxiety, Wilkins' work has had a profound impact on his subjects. He shared an instance where a family expressed that his interaction had significantly boosted their daughter, who has autism and mental health issues, stating it "saved my daughter's life."

Another notable encounter involved Theo, an autistic and homeless individual seeking support. Wilkins has maintained contact, providing updates on Theo's progress in securing housing and benefits, with his online community rallying to offer donations and encouragement.

Through his platform, Wilkins seeks to dismantle stereotypes associated with various subcultures, from punks to goths. He encourages individuals who are hesitant to express themselves to gain confidence by seeing others do so, fostering a sense of community and acceptance.
