The gathering, which began in San Francisco in 1986 and moved to Nevada in 1990, has grown significantly. While fatalities have occurred throughout its history, averaging about one death per year among the large crowds, the event has also seen a demographic shift. Recent data indicates an increase in older participants, with approximately 24 percent of attendees last year being 50 or older, a rise from 16 percent in 2014. The event organizers expressed deep sadness over the losses and extended condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.
