Pop Star's Chimp Finds Contentment in Art & Apes

Bubbles, the chimpanzee formerly owned by pop icon Michael Jackson, is now living a contented life at the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Florida. At 43 years old, he has surpassed the average life expectancy for male chimps in captivity and has become an elder statesman within the sanctuary.

Upon his arrival 21 years ago, Bubbles experienced difficulties adjusting to life among other chimpanzees, particularly the females. However, as he grew and gained confidence, he eventually became the leader of his group, a position he has held for many years. His current habitat allows him to explore and engage in activities like producing abstract paintings.

These enrichment activities, including painting, are optional for the apes and are offered if they appeal to them. Bubbles is one of the apes who enjoys painting, and his colorful, impressionistic artworks have even been auctioned off for fundraising. Some of his paintings have previously sold for significant amounts, demonstrating a surprising market for his creative endeavors.
