Griner Divorce: Money Fuels Court Battle

The divorce proceedings between Brittney Griner and Cherelle Griner have entered a new phase, with financial matters taking center stage. Cherelle has formally responded to Brittney's divorce petition, filed on July 30, 2026, requesting the court to consider Brittney's substantial income when determining financial support. She asserts a significant income disparity, stating she cannot meet her financial needs without continued assistance.

Brittney, a player for the Connecticut Sun, reportedly secured a contract worth over $1 million for the 2026 season. Cherelle, who works in the legal sector, is highlighting this difference in her request for support. The court has not yet issued any ruling on a specific support amount, and the case remains active.

Beyond finances, the court is also addressing custody arrangements for their young son, Bash, born in July 2024. Cherelle is seeking joint legal custody, with a determination of physical custody and parenting time to be made in the child's best interests. Brittney's initial filing also requested joint custody and child support based on Georgia's guidelines.

This development adds another layer to the highly publicized divorce, which began after eight years of marriage. The couple, who met at Baylor University, married on June 18, 2018. Cherelle was a visible supporter during Brittney's nearly 10-month detention in Russia in 2022, actively campaigning for her release. Despite Brittney's return in December 2022 and the birth of their son in 2024, the marriage is now irretrievably broken, with both parties citing no hope of reconciliation.
