18 Oct, 2025
Summary
- Experts advise Brits to stop mowing lawns by late October/early November
- Mowing in winter can damage grass due to frost and reduced photosynthesis
- Met Office predicts a cold, rough winter ahead after a blistering summer

With the Met Office predicting a cold and rough winter ahead, British homeowners are scrambling to prepare their lawns for the harsher conditions. A garden expert has now revealed the best time for Brits to stop mowing their lawns before winter arrives.
According to the expert, the ideal window to complete the last lawn mow is the end of October and/or the beginning of November, giving gardeners about three weeks to get this task done. Mowing during the winter months is not recommended, as the frost that forms on grass blades can make them brittle and prone to snapping. Additionally, cutting the grass too short reduces its ability to photosynthesize, further weakening the lawn.
