Bright Idea: Blue LED Light Outshines Bleach for Removing Stubborn Stains
5 Sep
Summary
- Blue LED light more effective than bleach or UV for removing sweat, juice stains
- Sustainable method avoids harsh chemicals
- Lightens stains on cotton, silk, polyester without fabric damage

According to a study published on September 5, 2025, researchers have found that high-intensity blue LED light is a more effective and eco-friendly solution for removing stubborn stains from clothing compared to traditional bleaching methods.
The study, conducted by Japanese scientists, tested various stain removal techniques on different fabrics, including silk, cotton, and polyester. They discovered that exposing sweat-like stains to blue LED light for just 10 minutes substantially reduced the yellow discoloration, outperforming both bleach and UV exposure.
The researchers explained that their method utilizes the power of visible blue light in combination with ambient oxygen to drive the photobleaching process. This approach avoids the use of harsh chemical oxidants typically required in conventional bleaching, making it a more sustainable solution.

Additional tests showed the blue LED treatment was also effective in lightening stains caused by orange juice, tomato juice, and aged oleic acid on cotton fabrics without damaging the material. In contrast, UV exposure was found to generate new yellow-colored compounds, exacerbating the problem.
The scientists are now working to commercialize a light-based system for both home and industrial use, but they need to conduct further safety testing before it can be widely adopted. This innovative technology presents a promising alternative to traditional bleaching methods, offering a more eco-friendly way to revive stained clothing and fabrics.
