The Blackburn Diocese, representing the Church of England in Lancashire, is marking its 100th anniversary with a significant public celebration. This 'Big Day Out' event is scheduled to take place in the centre of Blackpool, offering a day of free activities for the community. The diocese, which supports approximately 235 parishes, was originally founded in 1926 to provide Christian pastoral support.
The festivities will commence at 11:00 BST across various locations on Church Street, including St John's Church and its primary school. A Family Zone will cater to younger children with crafts and worship, while a Youth Zone will provide age-appropriate games and food for older students. Parents can drop off registered children at the youth zone.
From 13:00, the main stage in St John's Square will host live music and comedy. Guests are encouraged to bring picnics, with refreshments available for purchase. The day will conclude with an open-to-all worship celebration service in the square from 14:00 to 15:00, featuring music and reflections on the diocese's century of service.
Practical arrangements include three hours of free parking at a local Sainsbury's and several public transport options, with Blackpool North train station and various bus/tram stops nearby. Coach services are advised to use St John's Square for drop-offs.
