Bethlehem Lights Up: Christmas Returns Amidst Conflict

Bethlehem's Manger Square was illuminated as hundreds gathered for the lighting of a giant Christmas tree, heralding the return of festive celebrations. This marks the first public holiday observance since the commencement of the Gaza war.

Attendees, including local residents and visitors, participated in singing and dancing around the adorned tree situated before the historic Nativity Church. Some shared optimistic sentiments, expressing hope that the event's light would usher in a more positive future.

While acknowledging the ongoing suffering in Gaza, Bethlehem's Mayor Maher Canawati defended the decision to proceed with the celebrations. He conveyed a deep-seated belief that the Christmas spirit should not be halted or canceled, underscoring its enduring significance.
