Bengaluru Temple Halts Weddings Amidst Divorce Drama

The Someshwara Swamy Temple in Bengaluru, an ancient Chola-era shrine, has suspended wedding ceremonies for the past six to seven years. This halt is attributed to a dramatic increase in divorce cases, which compelled priests to attend court proceedings as witnesses. The temple, also known as the Ulsoor or Halasuru temple, has historically been a popular venue for nuptials.

The temple administration's decision was made to mitigate legal entanglements for its priests. Reports indicate a surge in divorce complaints, with temple officials handling over 50 such cases in the last two years, a significant jump from fewer than five annually a decade ago. This situation strained temple resources and potentially impacted its image.

While the temple continues to host other religious rituals, the ban on weddings has elicited mixed reactions. Some support the move for safeguarding the temple's sanctity and priests' time, while others view it as an overreaction impacting cultural practices. The temple authorities may revisit the policy in the future.
