As the city of Bengaluru prepares to welcome the Goddess Durga, the air is filled with a palpable sense of joy and excitement. According to Neel Sinha, the president of the North Bangalore Cultural Samithi, the Durga Puja celebrations in Bengaluru have a rich history of nearly 100 years.
The first community pujas were said to have been organized by Bengali professors at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and since then, the city has witnessed a proliferation of vibrant Durga Puja celebrations. The tradition of pandal hopping, where people visit various pandals (temporary structures) to admire the intricate Durga idols, has become particularly popular among the young Bengalureans.
The Durga idols, crafted by skilled artisans from Kolkata, are as lifelike as the ones seen in the city of Kolkata. The pandals are adorned with Daaker Saaj, made of silver foil and sequins, creating a mesmerizing display of festive splendor. Beyond the deep spiritual experience, the pandals also offer cultural events, book fests, and a diverse array of culinary options, from Hilsa curry and biryani to sandesh and rosogolla.
The Jayamahal Puja, one of the oldest in Bengaluru, offers a nostalgic experience themed around lost childhood, featuring games and memorabilia from the past. The RT Nagar Socio Cultural Trust's Durga Puja celebration, now in its 19th year, is set to captivate audiences with an exclusive live concert, a Dandiya night, and a theme that resonates deeply in today's world: mukti (freedom).
