Aurora Park at Geauga Lake is opening its initial nine-acre section on October 25, transforming a long-abandoned 48-acre site into a public recreation space. The city of Aurora acquired the lakefront property for $5.3 million in December 2024, following the closure of Wildwater Kingdom in 2016. This first phase features a restored pier, picnic areas, boating access, and preserved structures from its amusement park past.
Future phases of Aurora Park are planned to include a playground, public beach, sports facilities, and an amphitheater, offering a complete community hub. While the thrill rides and marine shows of SeaWorld and Six Flags will not return, the redevelopment aims to create a serene environment for outdoor activities and to honor the site's nostalgic history for Northeast Ohio residents.
The property has a storied past, having hosted attractions like SeaWorld Ohio and Six Flags Worlds of Adventure over more than a century. Its closure in 2016 left the land vacant, prompting the city's acquisition to ensure public access and preserve it for future generations. Construction began in 2026, financed in part by a $12 million bond for the initial phase.
