Victoria and Richard Mackenzie-Childs, the acclaimed artists behind the luxury pottery brand Mackenzie-Childs, have embraced an extraordinary lifestyle for the past quarter-century. They reside aboard the Yankee Ferry, the sole surviving Ellis Island ferryboat, moored in Staten Island. This unique living arrangement began after they lost their company, which they founded in 1983 and is known for its distinctive checkered and floral patterns.
Their journey to life on the water was born out of necessity. Following the bankruptcy and subsequent sale of their company in 2000, the couple sought a space to live and work that was affordable and unconventional. They discovered the Yankee Ferry, initially intending to use it solely as a studio, but soon found themselves living and sleeping aboard, embracing the freedom it offered.
The historic vessel, a 150-foot-long, four-level ship built in 1907, is now listed for sale at $1.25 million. Having previously served immigrants, troops, and holidaymakers, the ferry offers a sprawling 10,000 square feet of living and studio space, representing a unique piece of history and an unparalleled living opportunity.
