Aquarium Honors Dying Octopus 'Ghost' with Cremation and Tribute

As of September 27th, 2025, the Aquarium of the Pacific in Los Angeles is mourning the impending loss of its giant Pacific octopus, affectionately known as 'Ghost.' The aquarium recently announced that Ghost has entered the final stage of her life cycle, known as senescence, where she is devoting all her energy to tending to her unfertilized eggs.

In an exclusive update, the aquarium's vice president of animal care, Nate Jaros, has revealed that after Ghost passes away, the veterinary team will perform a necropsy examination, similar to a human autopsy, to learn more about her health and ensure the aquarium is providing optimal care for its other octopuses. Ghost's remains will then be cremated, a fitting tribute to the iconic creature.

To further honor Ghost's legacy, the Aquarium of the Pacific is working with an artist to create a commemorative print featuring the beloved octopus. This print will be part of the aquarium's efforts to celebrate Ghost's life and the impact she has had on both the staff and the public who have visited her over the years.
