Solo Drinkers Banned: Bar Owner Cites 'Nightmare' Customers

Alibi, a cocktail bar in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, has sparked debate with its new policy that prohibits single individuals from entering after 9 PM. Owner Carl Peters explained that the rule is primarily for the safety of guests, citing difficulties in managing situations involving lone patrons in a busy, late-night environment.

Peters also expressed concern that solo drinkers, lacking companions to converse with, might approach and disturb other groups. He believes this policy eliminates potential disruptions and ensures a more controlled atmosphere for all patrons. The bar’s door policy is clearly communicated via a sign, emphasizing that entry is permitted only for those accompanied by existing guests.

Beyond the ban on solo drinkers, Alibi enforces a stringent dress code, barring sportswear, tracksuits, Stone Island clothing, baseball caps, and ripped jeans, which the owner associates with 'roadman' fashion. Peters has defended these policies against accusations of discrimination, framing them as necessary measures to maintain the bar's desired ambiance and ensure a positive experience for his clientele.
