From Wheelchair to Wave: A Surfer's Inspiring Comeback

The author's childhood was defined by the sea and surfing at Porthcawl, south Wales. However, developing chronic illnesses in her teens, including endometriosis and a connective tissue disorder, progressively impacted her mobility. By age 23, following an acute infection, she lost the use of her legs and became a full-time wheelchair user. Her health further complicated by a paralyzed stomach, requiring tube feeding.
Her 24th birthday brought an unexpected gift from her brother, Leon, an adaptive surf coach: a modified surfboard with handles. Initially daunted by her limited mobility and the challenges of beach access, the author decided to try adaptive surfing in Bude, Cornwall. With her brother's support, she was placed on the board and, using her arms and a surprising muscle memory, rode a wave.
This experience of adaptive surfing, a practice she hadn't known existed, offered more than a return to a beloved activity. It provided her with a profound sense of physical power and unparalleled joy, essentially gifting her a new life. Despite a handle breaking off after the first session, her determination to surf remains, forever grateful for the sea being returned to her.
