David Pine, a 91-year-old former fighter pilot and resident of Gig Harbor, has successfully summited Angels Landing, a trail widely considered one of the most dangerous in the United States. Pine, who previously hiked the trail at age 89, returned in May with his son, grandson, and a friend. The challenging 5.4-mile round-trip hike features an 1,488-foot elevation gain and requires hikers to navigate steep cliffs with the aid of chains.
During his recent ascent, Pine carried a small pebble, intending to leave it at the highest point possible in memory of his son-in-law, Houston Dougharty, who passed away approximately one year ago. He found a crevice to place the pebble, believing it would remain there for centuries. Pine acknowledged the trip was exhausting but emphasized his safe return.
While Pine had considered a return hike for his 92nd birthday, he decided against it due to exhaustion from his latest accomplishment. He now plans to focus on more local hikes with his family.
