- The 82-year-old aims to raise £40,000 for repairs.
- He took up fitness classes at age 70.

Reverend Vernon Lidstone, a retired prison chaplain aged 82, recently participated in a powerlifting event to support his local church. He successfully lifted a combined total of 200kg across three disciplines: a 100kg deadlift, a 50kg squat, and a 50kg bench press.
Lidstone's goal is to raise £40,000 to replace the ageing heating system at St Peter's Church in Framilode, Gloucestershire, which broke down last month and is beyond repair. He began his fitness journey at 70 and took up powerlifting approximately a year ago.
The event took place at Crazy Strength Gym in Salisbury, Wiltshire. Lidstone expressed that strength training significantly aids in everyday activities, enabling him to perform tasks he previously could not. He anticipates the funds raised will be substantial, though the final amount will be confirmed in about two weeks.
