Ng Bee Kia, an 80-year-old resident of Singapore, actively challenges the notion that age limits physical activity. A former national weightlifting champion in his youth, he now dedicates his time to inspiring others.
In the 1970s, Ng represented Singapore, securing bronze in Kuala Lumpur in 1971 and silver at home in 1973. After retiring, he found renewed purpose by returning to exercise, which structured his days and provided relaxation.
His active lifestyle led him to volunteer at a senior citizens' gym, where his weightlifting background proved invaluable. He now leads a group called Team Strong Silvers, encouraging consistent physical activity.
Despite undergoing spinal stabilization surgery two years ago and a total knee replacement last year, Ng remains committed to fitness. He now focuses on upper-body exercises with reduced intensity, prioritizing stability and mobility. He also has another knee surgery scheduled in the coming months.
Ng believes that while certain exercises may be too strenuous, basic movements are still possible and important for maintaining independence and well-being as one ages.
