70 Years, 70,000 Letters: Pen Pals Become Family

For seven decades, an extraordinary friendship has blossomed between two women, Kathleen Wilson of Scotland and Shirley Yaeger of Wisconsin, who began as transatlantic pen pals in 1956. Initially connected through a Brownie group initiative, their correspondence started with letters and has evolved through emails to the current use of WhatsApp, demonstrating a remarkable adaptation to changing communication technologies.

The bond forged between Kathleen, then 10, and Shirley, then 11, has become so profound that Kathleen named her daughter after Shirley. This unique connection has led their families to affectionately refer to them as Shirley America and Shirley Scotland, underscoring the intertwined nature of their lives.

Their friendship has gracefully navigated childhood, adolescence, family life, and now retirement. They have met in person on three occasions, most recently in the United States, an experience that deepened their already strong connection, making them feel even more like family.
