Danish Teen's UK Adventure Becomes 60-Year NHS Career

Vibeke Karner Nicklin, an 80-year-old nurse, is marking six decades of unwavering commitment to the National Health Service. Originally from Denmark, she arrived in the UK in 1964 with plans for a one-year au pair experience. Her life took a different turn when she met her future husband, Roger, deciding to remain in England and pursue her lifelong ambition of becoming a nurse.

After completing her nursing training, Vibeke has spent the last 40 years primarily at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and Arrowe Park Hospital. Her journey included initial challenges with the English language and an administrative error that required her to restart her nursing training. Despite these hurdles, she persevered, forging a distinguished career.

Vibeke has observed immense changes within the NHS, recalling a time when gloves were not standard practice and sterilization methods were rudimentary. She notes significant advancements in infection control and surgical techniques, allowing for shorter patient recovery times. However, she also acknowledges the increased pressure on hospitals today, with full beds and sicker patients.

Despite reaching the age of 80, Vibeke has no immediate plans for retirement. She expresses gratitude for her health and the fulfillment she derives from her work, stating she will retire only when she feels she has had enough. She looks forward to celebrating her milestone birthday with loved ones and former colleagues.
