29 Dachshunds Rescued, SPCA Temporarily Closed
27 Jun
Summary
- 29 Dachshunds were rescued from a single home.
- The Adams County SPCA temporarily closed due to the influx of dogs.
- Many rescued Dachshunds are pregnant and require extensive care.

The Adams County SPCA is currently closed to the public following the rescue of 29 Dachshunds from a residence in Conewago Township. Shelter personnel responded to a request for assistance from the home's owner, who had bred Dachshunds for years but could no longer care for them due to declining health.
Upon arrival on Friday morning, June 26, 2026, staff discovered the 29 Dachshunds living in conditions described as dark, hot, and unsanitary. Most of the dogs had overgrown nails, dental issues, and matted coats. They had reportedly not been outside the home in three years.
The extensive veterinary care needed for the rescued Dachshunds, including examinations, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and microchipping, means they will not be available for adoption for some time. Several female dogs are also pregnant. The SPCA is accepting donations of puppy toys and monetary contributions to help cover veterinary costs.
