Hazel Whittaker, who lived through the bombings of World War Two, is celebrating her 106th birthday. Her remarkable longevity is attributed, in part, to a daily ritual: a small amount of whisky added to her first cup of tea.
Born in 1920, Whittaker recalls the intense experience of wartime bombings in Cheslyn Hay. She worked at English Electric in Stafford during the war, a significant industrial center at the time. She later had two children, but has outlived them and now has two grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
Her recent birthday party, held on Friday at Cheslyn Hay Village Hall, was attended by friends and family, with a special card received from King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Whittaker's granddaughter, Shelley Wardle, describes her as independent, still enjoying baking, pub lunches, and social activities.
Whittaker's simple advice for a long life includes living well and abstaining from drugs and cigarettes. She also enjoys other drinks, like sangria, with her friends.
