Centenarian Receives 105 Global Cards for 105th Birthday

A remarkable centenarian in Edinburgh celebrated her 105th birthday by receiving an astonishing 105 cards from well-wishers worldwide. Mary Davidson Smith, residing at Care UK's Murrayside care home, described reading the global greetings as a "wonderful time." The cards journeyed from distant locations, including Singapore, to mark her special July celebration.

Ms. Smith also holds the unique distinction of receiving a card from His Majesty King Charles, having previously been honored with one from the late Queen Elizabeth II. Her milestone birthday was celebrated with family and friends at Murrayside, complete with afternoon tea prepared by the home's chef. She fondly recalled her birth in Korea and her youth spent living internationally before meeting her husband in Washington DC.

Mary and her husband, Charles Wynard Davidson Smith, settled in Edinburgh, where they raised their two sons, Neil and Mark. She now cherishes her four grandchildren. Looking ahead, Ms. Smith has already planned for her 106th birthday, expressing a desire to celebrate with a "good strong whisky." She attributes her longevity to "enjoying it" and "keeping on going," noting she comes from a "long line of others that have lived long lives."

In a poignant moment, Ms. Smith was recently reunited with a traditional Korean outfit, known as hanbok, which she wore as a young girl nearly a century ago. Museum officials facilitated a private tour, allowing her to see the charming ensemble, which included a hat, bag, and jacket, at the National Museum of Scotland. The home manager, Suzanne Welsh, expressed the joy of celebrating Mary's special day, highlighting her as a beloved resident and an active participant in the care home's community life.
