Summary

- The zoo's puffin habitat is temporarily closed as a precaution.
- Humans can contract the disease, but risks to guests are believed low.

The Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium has temporarily closed its puffin habitat following the deaths of three tufted puffins. These birds died since June 23 from suspected avian psittacosis, commonly known as parrot fever. Zoo officials are investigating the cause, which may involve exposure to wild birds.
While the disease can affect humans, the zoo stated that the risk to guests is believed to be low. No active human cases linked to the zoo have been reported. The aviary will remain closed until health and veterinary experts confirm it is safe for reopening.
As a precaution, all surviving puffins are receiving antibiotic treatment. Animal care staff are using enhanced protective gear. The zoo plans a deep clean of the facility. Visitors can still view puffins and sea lions from an underwater viewing area.
