Zambian Nurse Survives Cancer, Cardiac Arrests in India

A young nurse from Zambia, Mumba Margaret, has overcome a grim prognosis after a life-saving stem cell transplant and recovery from severe complications at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad. Diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in September 2023, her initial treatment pathway was complicated by tuberculosis and a relapse of her cancer, necessitating further chemotherapy. She spent nearly 40 days hospitalized dealing with these challenges.

Following her stem cell transplant on June 19, Ms. Margaret faced extreme post-transplant issues. These included dangerous electrolyte imbalances, which can lead to seizures, kidney failure, and heart instability. Her condition worsened significantly, leading to a critical phase where she suffered more than seven cardiac arrests.

The medical team's swift and coordinated response, involving specialists from critical care, cardiology, and stem cell transplantation, was crucial in reviving her after each event. Ms. Margaret's remarkable recovery highlights the advanced medical care available and the resilience of the human spirit against overwhelming odds.
