Yunnan's Deadly Delicacy: Mushroom Season Brings Peril
3 Aug
Summary
- Over 200 wild mushroom species in Yunnan are toxic, with 20 being deadly.
- Yunnan implements a risk-assessment system for its peak June-August season.
- Fatalities from mushroom poisoning in China hit a record low in 2025.

As Yunnan province's peak wild mushroom season runs from June to August, local authorities have intensified prevention efforts. Over 200 wild mushroom species in the region are known to be toxic, posing a significant risk, with around 20 being deadly. Many dangerous varieties closely resemble safe ones, making identification difficult.
Health authorities are enhancing medical training and improving intensive care capabilities in high-risk counties. Despite these measures, 2025 saw 828 mushroom poisoning incidents affecting 2,165 people across China. Notably, the five most affected provinces were Hunan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, and Shandong.
Researchers link Shandong's sharp increase in cases to climate change, with warming temperatures and increased rainfall potentially expanding toxic mushroom habitats. Although poisoning incidents reached a seven-year high, fatalities fell to a record low of 0.6 percent, attributed to greater public awareness and improved emergency response.
Commercial sources are also a concern, with 69 patients in 20 separate incidents having consumed poisonous mushrooms purchased commercially, including four cases linked to online purchases.
