YouTuber Ruhi Çenet faces public backlash for attending a wedding in Istanbul, Turkey, after being potentially exposed to the hantavirus during a cruise expedition.
Çenet was a passenger on the MV Hondius cruise, which embarked on an "Atlantic expedition" from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1. Officials suspect a hantavirus outbreak occurred on the ship, leading to the deaths of three passengers and staff.
The expedition, which included stops en route to Spain's Canary Islands, is now under investigation by the World Health Organization. Authorities believe a Dutch couple contracted the virus before boarding, with the couple and a German national succumbing to the illness.
Çenet disembarked the ship on April 24 in St. Helena and claims to have no symptoms of hantavirus, such as fever or muscle aches. He attended the May 3 wedding before being fully aware of the WHO's investigation into the outbreak.
He later stated on Instagram that his attendance was due to not initially receiving notification about the WHO probe, which was announced on the same day as the wedding. Çenet is currently quarantined and closely monitoring his health.
