The Heart and Sole Cancer Walk continues to thrive, with youth initiatives significantly contributing to its fundraising success. A class at L.B. Williams Elementary School, inspired by the novel "Holes," created and sold Peach Sploosh smoothies, raising $1,300. Complementing this, Woonsocket High School senior Hunter Fenske's "Tackle Out Cancer" project, featuring football-themed T-shirts, brought in nearly $3,000.
These youth-driven efforts underscore the "We Are Family" theme of this year's walk, echoing its nearly three-decade legacy. Established in 1998 after local organizers opted to create their own event rather than adapt to an overnight format, the walk has since provided over $600,000 in assistance to local cancer patients through the Mitchell Area Cancer Assistance Board.
Traditions like Christine Perkins's annual cupcake baking and a live radio pie auction, which raised $1,615 this year, continue to support the cause. The Mitchell Hockey Association's Pink the Rink event also added $8,262. The walk itself, which began in 1996 as a Relay for Life, has evolved with features like a 5K run and now takes place at Hitchcock Park, offering a space for remembrance and community support.
