Youth Mental Health & Substance Use Improve
28 Jul
Summary
- Adolescents show reduced use of tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana.
- Teen depression and suicide thoughts have also declined.
- Millions still need substance use disorder treatment.
A key U.S. government report indicates continued improvements in mental health and substance use metrics, particularly for adolescents. Data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows fewer young people aged 12 to 17 reported using tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and illicit drugs. This age group also saw declining trends in major depressive episodes and serious thoughts of suicide.
Trends were also favorable for young adults aged 18 to 25. Despite these promising signs, mental health challenges persist, with nearly 20% of adolescents experiencing moderate to severe anxiety symptoms. Millions of people still face substance use disorders, and a significant majority do not receive the necessary treatment.
