Gut Wreckers: 6 Foods Masquerading as Healthy
23 Nov
Summary
- Flavored yogurts and protein bars often contain hidden sugars and additives.
- Granola and breakfast cereals can be loaded with sugar and refined oils.
- Artificial sweeteners in diet drinks can negatively impact gut microbes.

Some popular foods often perceived as healthy may actually be detrimental to gut health. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist, identified six such items, warning consumers about their hidden ingredients and potential side effects.
Items like flavored yogurts and protein bars can contribute to digestive discomfort due to high sugar content and artificial additives. Similarly, granola and many breakfast cereals, despite their high-fiber claims, are frequently packed with sugar and unhealthy oils that can trigger inflammation. Even seemingly harmless zero-calorie drinks and diet sodas contain artificial sweeteners that can disrupt beneficial gut bacteria.
Dr. Sethi suggests simple swaps to improve gut health. Plain yogurt with fresh fruit, whole-food protein sources, unsweetened plant-based milks, oats with berries, and sparkling water are recommended alternatives. Avoiding packaged salad dressings in favor of olive oil and spices can also help reduce inflammation and promote a healthier digestive system.
