11 Oct
Summary
- Aisling Gallagher was diagnosed with rectal cancer at 28.
- She experienced changes in bowel habits, blood, and bloating.
- UK cancer rates for 25-49 year olds rose 24% since the 90s.

Aisling Gallagher, a retail manager from Belfast, was diagnosed with stage-two rectal cancer at the young age of 28. Initially experiencing changes in bowel habits, urgency, blood in her stool, and bloating, she initially dismissed these symptoms due to her perceived good health.
These symptoms worsened over several months, leading to significant weight loss and a loss of appetite. An urgent colonoscopy in August 2020 revealed a tumor in her rectum. The cancer had also spread to 11 lymph nodes, necessitating extensive treatment.
Gallagher underwent radiation therapy, oral chemotherapy, and anterior resection surgery, which included a temporary stoma. Following the surgery, she completed six additional months of chemotherapy to prevent recurrence. The treatment resulted in infertility and early menopause.
Now celebrating five years in remission, Gallagher is a strong advocate for early detection. She emphasizes that cancer does not discriminate by age or health status and urges others to listen to their bodies and seek medical attention for any unusual changes.
