Study: Pre-Teens More Vulnerable to Social Media Stress

Children aged 10 to 13 years are more susceptible to social media-induced stress than their 14 to 16-year-old counterparts, according to a recent study by PGIMER. Researchers found that younger adolescents reported higher levels of digital stress, with 52% of the 1,306 students surveyed experiencing mild to severe effects.

The study, conducted between January and April of this year, also indicated that problematic social media use was more prevalent among the younger cohort. Around 20% of 10-13 year olds reported such use, compared to approximately 12% of those aged 14-16. Factors contributing to this stress include the pressure for constant availability, seeking validation through likes, and fear of missing out (FOMO).

Urban adolescents and those exhibiting problematic social media engagement were identified as particularly vulnerable. The research involved 1,306 school-going adolescents in urban Chandigarh and rural Raipur Rani. Findings also showed a link between internet dependency and digital stress, with about 40% of adolescents reporting such dependency.

Experts emphasize the importance of guiding children toward healthy digital habits, rather than solely monitoring screen time. The pressures of social media can be challenging for younger children who may be less equipped to manage them, underscoring the role of parents and schools in providing support.
