Suicide prevention training sessions have been conducted for professionals in Yorkton by the Society for the Involvement of Good Neighbors (SIGN). Volunteers from first-response agencies and other organizations participated in a four-hour session on Wednesday. The training focuses on adopting a trauma-informed approach to discussing suicide.
Organizers noted that despite Saskatchewan losing over 200 people annually to suicide, the topic remains stigmatized. The program is designed to help participants feel more comfortable and natural when discussing suicide, with the goal of listening to individuals and connecting them to appropriate care.
Nicole Baptist, Yorkton's Bylaw & Safety Supervisor, found the training highly beneficial, highlighting that the skills learned are applicable to various conversations and strengthen human connection. SIGN hopes attendees will share their knowledge, making conversations about suicide more natural and widespread.
For those experiencing suicidal thoughts, support is available via the 988 Suicide Crisis Helpline or the Mobile Crisis Centre.
