Cancer Patients Find Peace Through Gentle Yoga

Gentle yoga sessions are providing a vital support system for individuals diagnosed with cancer in Shropshire, thanks to funding from the Lingen Davies cancer charity. These inclusive wellbeing sessions, which also include sound baths, are held at locations like the Mascall Centre in Ludlow. Designed to accommodate all stages of cancer, the classes offer seated modifications and a permissive approach to exercise, led by instructors like Marie Burrows of Marches Movement.

Participants have shared how these classes significantly aid their recovery and overall wellbeing. Rachel Massey, diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2018, highlighted the importance of moving joints after chemotherapy and the benefit of meeting others. Suzanne Morris, who is in remission from aggressive breast cancer diagnosed in October 2024, described the sessions as "very gentle and very soothing," helping her find peace. Lesley, diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer a decade ago, values the teacher's understanding of the cancer journey and the community aspect of the classes.

The Lingen Davies charity ensures these sessions are fully subsidized, making them accessible to everyone regardless of their financial situation. The aim is to create a safe space for individuals to reconnect with their bodies, regain a sense of agency, and foster a peaceful connection between mind and body after a distressing experience. The classes emphasize gentle movement, relaxation, and peer support, contributing to a sense of achievement and surprise at participants' capabilities.
