14 May
Summary
- Yoga practice linked to lower blood pressure in overweight/obese individuals.
- Study suggests benefits after 12 weeks of yoga, at least 3 times weekly.
- Yoga offers additional benefits like improved sleep and mood.

A recent review of studies indicates that regular yoga practice may significantly lower blood pressure in individuals who are overweight or have obesity. The research, published in PLOS Global Public Health, analyzed 30 trials involving nearly 2,700 participants.
Participants who engaged in yoga showed modest yet clinically meaningful reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The greatest benefits were observed in Asian participants. Researchers suggest that practicing yoga for at least 12 weeks, with sessions at least three times per week for an hour each, yields the most significant improvements.
Beyond its cardiovascular benefits, yoga is noted for improving inflammation markers, blood glucose metabolism, and cholesterol levels. Experts also highlight yoga's positive impact on sleep, mood, and overall well-being, making it an accessible and non-intimidating option for increasing physical activity.
