Doctors at RML Hospital have achieved a global first by performing a minimally invasive heart surgery on a 31-year-old woman with Situs Inversus, a rare condition where internal organs are mirrored. The patient, from Rajasthan, presented with a complete reversal of her organs, including her heart on the right side.
She was also diagnosed with a partial Atrioventricular (AV) canal defect, causing abnormal blood mixing. The surgery, conducted on March 30, utilized a 4 cm cosmetic incision, avoiding the need to cut the chest bone. This innovative approach is a significant advancement in treating complex congenital heart conditions.
The defect was repaired using a pericardial patch and meticulously placed sutures. The patient, covered under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, was discharged on Friday, marking a successful outcome for this rare and complex medical intervention.
