Summary
- Report highlights global rise in workplace stress and wellbeing challenges.
- Businesses rely on reactive perks, ignoring fundamental causes of stress.
- Prolonged stress can cause serious physical and mental health issues.

Workplace stress is escalating globally, with a significant disconnect between employers' intentions and actual impact on employee wellbeing, according to a new report by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
Workers across 22 countries, including the UK, report unprecedented pressure. Experts caution that relying on reactive benefits and lifestyle perks, while neglecting issues like workload, job design, and organizational culture, is akin to 'papering over cracks'. These superficial measures fail to protect staff from avoidable harm.
Mental health challenges, including stress, anxiety, and depression, are the most common concerns. Prolonged stress can have severe long-term physical consequences, such as an increased risk of heart attack and weight gain, driven by hormonal responses like cortisol and adrenaline.
In Great Britain alone, approximately 964,000 workers experienced work-related stress, depression, or anxiety in 2024/25, contributing to millions of lost working days. Union leaders and health professionals emphasize the need for prompt intervention and proactive prevention strategies to address the root causes of these issues.
Experts stress that embedding prevention into systems, culture, and leadership is crucial. This involves strong commitment from top management, clear communication, and fostering psychologically safe environments where concerns can be raised. The future of workplace health demands a shift from reactive firefighting to building sustainable, healthy, and resilient working environments.
